GENERATION OF ENTANGLED STATES OF TWO DISTANT CAVITY MODES VIA JOSEPHSON JUNCTION BASED DEVICES

2007

We present a simple scheme for the preparation of entangled states of the e.m. modes of two spatially separated microwave cavities exploiting their interaction with two superconducting SQUID rings embedded within them. The scheme requires that the two SQUID qubits are initially prepared in an entangled state and the possibility of controlling both the coupling strengths and the interaction times. We also briefly discuss the importance of such a theoretical scheme in view of possible applications in the context of quantum computing and its experimental feasibility.

Running-phase state in a Josephson washboard potential

2005

We investigate the dynamics of the phase variable of an ideal underdamped Josephson junction in switching current experiments. These experiments have provided the first evidence for macroscopic quantum tunneling in large Josephson junctions and are currently used for state read-out of superconducting qubits. We calculate the shape of the resulting macroscopic wavepacket and find that the propagation of the wavepacket long enough after a switching event leads to an average voltage increasing linearly with time.

Number theory implications on the physical properties of elementary cubic networks of Josephson junctions

2003

Number theory concepts are used to investigate the periodicity properties of the voltage vs applied flux curves of elementary cubic networks of Josephson junctions. It is found that equatorial gaps appearing on the unitary sphere, on which points representing the directions in space for which these curves show periodicity are collected, can be understood by means of Gauss condition on the sum of the squares of three integers.

Stability, sub-gap current, 1/f-noise, and elemental depth profiling of annealed Al:Mn-AlOX-Al normal metal-insulator-superconducting tunnel junctions

2016

In this paper we report a study of the effect of vacuum annealing at 400◦C on the properties of normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) tunnel junctions, with manganese doped aluminium (Al:Mn) as the normal metal, aluminum as the superconductor and amorphous aluminum oxide as the tunneling barrier (Al:Mn-AlOx-Al). The annealing treatment improves the stability of the junctions, increases their tunneling resistance and does not have a negative impact on the low-temperature current-voltage characteristics. The measured 1 / f resistance noise of the junctions also changes after annealing, in the best case decreasing by over an order of magnitude. All these observations show that annealing …

Microwave-induced coupling of superconducting qubits

2008

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a system of two coupled superconducting qubits under microwave irradiation. We find that, with the qubits operated at the charge co-degeneracy point, the quantum evolution of the system can be described by a new effective Hamiltonian which has the form of two coupled qubits with tunable coupling between them. This Hamiltonian can be used for experimental tests on macroscopic entanglement and for implementing quantum gates.

Interaction-free measurements with superconducting qubits

2008

An interaction-free measurement protocol is described for a quantum circuit consisting of a superconducting qubit and a read-out Josephson junction. By measuring the state of the qubit one can ascertain the presence of a current pulse through the circuit at a previous time without any energy exchange between the qubit and the pulse.

Tunneling spectroscopy of giant vorticity states in superconducting micro- and nanorings at ultra-low temperatures

2008

Abstract When a superconducting contour is exposed to a magnetic field screening currents are induced. At temperatures well below the critical temperature Tc periodicity of the persistent currents can significantly exceed the superconducting flux quantum h / 2 e due to formation of metastable energy states with high quantum winding numbers (vorticity). We have studied the effect in normal metal-insulator-superconductor (NIS) and SIS’IS tunnel structures with the superconducting (S or S′) electrode in a shape of a loop. The tunnel current oscillates due to the modulation of the superconducting density of states by the persistent currents reaching the sub-critical values. In the limit of loop…

Decoherence in circuits of small Josephson junctions

2001

We discuss dephasing by the dissipative electromagnetic environment and by measurement in circuits consisting of small Josephson junctions. We present quantitative estimates and determine in which case the circuit might qualify as a quantum bit. Specifically, we analyse a three junction Cooper pair pump and propose a measurement to determine the decoherence time $\tau_\phi$.

Coulomb Blockade and Bloch Oscillations in Superconducting Ti Nanowires

2012

Quantum fluctuations in quasi-one-dimensional superconducting channels leading to spontaneous changes of the phase of the order parameter by $2\pi$, alternatively called quantum phase slips (QPS), manifest themselves as the finite resistance well below the critical temperature of thin superconducting nanowires and the suppression of persistent currents in tiny superconducting nanorings. Here we report the experimental evidence that in a current-biased superconducting nanowire the same QPS process is responsible for the insulating state -- the Coulomb blockade. When exposed to RF radiation, the internal Bloch oscillations can be synchronized with the external RF drive leading to formation of…
